What Are The Pros And Cons Of Electronic Publishing?

January 28, 2022

In recent years, there has been a surge in the availability and use of digital books. The emergence of the e-book is revolutionizing the publishing industry, as many authors have enabled digital versions of their work to be made.

However, authors should be aware of several drawbacks to digital publication before sharing or selling their work in this format. Electronic publication, sometimes known as e-publishing, delivers scientific articles and other content to users via the internet.

E-publications, on the other hand, aren't just electronic reproductions of paper publications; they can be created purely for electronic distribution. Because technology enables publishers to deliver content to readers quickly and efficiently, it drives significant changes in the publishing sector and influences how we read.

Advantages:

  • Open access
  • Quick publication
  • lower costs
  • International readership
  • High awareness
  • Links to articles cited in the study, as well as other pieces citing the paper
  • Unlimited number of figures, data, or even video footage that can be stored
  • Publishing bias may be reduced.
  • Articles can be widely distributed via websites, email notifications, and other means.

Disadvantages:

  • Computer Literacy
  • Ease of Theft
  • Plagiarism
  • Copyright Issues
  • Credit Issues
  • Viewing Difficulty
  • Document Availablity Issues
  • There is a perceived lack of trustworthiness, albeit this is gradually changing.
  • Some e-publishing businesses lack a sufficient peer review mechanism.
  • Will these e-publications be available in years to come, or will they be lost forever?
  • Is the end of paper publications insight?

We're only now starting to observe the consequences of e-publishing, but the benefits appear to outweigh the drawbacks far.

Do's and Don'ts In Electronic Publishing

  • Do:
  • Make sure the materials are of good quality.
  • When expressing an opinion, be clear and use a copyright notice.
  • Don't:
  • Copy someone else's work without their permission.
  • Assume that an electronic document is not protected by copyright.
